“Even if you cannot change all the people around you, you can change the people you choose to be around. Life is too short to waste your time on people who don’t respect, appreciate, and value you. Spend your life with people who make you smile, laugh, and feel loved.” ― Roy T. Bennett, The Light in the Heart
Having the one you trusted the most betray you is one of the worst feelings you can feel. And that is why being vulnerable and putting your trust completely on someone’s hand is highly frightening to many of us. You want to fully give yourself to them because your love is deep and you give people in your life the benefit of the doubt. You trust them until they turn around break your heart. No matter how much pride and self- respect you have, you give more and more to your partner.
That is the reason why betrayal coming from a person you have given your heart to is so painful.
You trusted them enough to expose all your vulnerabilities to them. And that is why it hurts the most.
Being hurt like this affects you. It can turn you into a completely different person. Yes, it can change you for good, but the chances are they can make you shut yourself up, changing your entirety.
One of the most difficult things you have to accept in this life is the fact that being in love with them does not mean that you can be with them.
But the person who caused you the most pain is the one you actually need to thank.
If it hadn’t been for them, you would have kept putting up with the abusive and disrespectful behavior. You would have accepted being mistreated. Had they not shown you their true face, you would have believed that they were the good person they pretended to be. You would not have gained the wisdom to see the reality.
Because they disrespected your value, now you are fully aware of what you’re worth.
It hurts more because you thought they loved you, not because you loved them. You did not know that they would leave one day. You believed that they would stay.
Forgive yourself for not knowing what you didn’t know and make a promise to use your newfound knowledge to protect yourself better in the future.
Incidents and situations like this show us who the good people are and who the bad people are. They help us protect ourselves. They teach us how to defend ourselves emotionally. So get to know yourself better. Discover your true self and do not let situations like this hold you back.
