The photographer Mads Nordsveen, came across the reindeer calf while hiking with friends.
A collection of stunning photographs of a white reindeer baby in the snow has gone viral after a photographer captured the rare sighting while on a hiking trip in Norway. Oslo-based photographer Mads Nordsveen, 24 years old, was traveling with friends in Senja, an island in northern Norway, when he came across the reindeer calf in a chance encounter.
The 24-year-old said: “I was walking in the mountains looking for nice landscapes for my travel photography when out of nowhere I saw this adorable animal.” While the wintery background almost entirely camouflaged the cute deer, the photographer said it made no attempt to hide and even ‘posed’ for some pictures.
But Nordsveen got more than pictures from experience: “He came very close to me, and we looked at each other straight in the eyes,” he recalled, “After some minutes the mother of the white deer came out of trees just behind. It walked around for some minutes before running back to its mother. It was very magical and a fairy tale moment.”
White reindeer have an uncommon genetic mutation that strips their fur of pigment to allow them to blend into their snowy surroundings. Unlike albinos, they still have dark pigmentation in their eyes and antlers.
It’s not the first time this explorer got lucky to meet wild animals in person. He also got to meet a Lynx and wolves, both also in Northern Norway.
Nordsveen, who regularly shares photographs of the Norwegian landscape on his Instagram account, admitted his surprise at finding such a perfect shot.
“Before trips, I do quite a lot of research to find the best locations and views,” he said. “However, you cannot plan magical moments like the reindeer photos.”
The wintry pictures have proved a hit with social media users. The original post has been liked over 25,000 times since it was published on Tuesday. And Nordsveen is delighted with the positive response.
“I am very pleased with the reaction,” he said. “[They are] some very special photos but I did not think it would blow up worldwide like this!”
