These Fantasy Dolls Are Made By My Sister, Who Has Been doing it Since She Was 16.

Hello to all of you, I am Elena and I’m writing this on behalf of my sister Helena who is an artist. About 16 years ago she started making dolls. Every one of her dolls is handcrafted and unique. In addition to doing their own hair, she also makes shoes and clothes for the dolls. Each face Helena creates is one-of-a-kind, as she does the carving herself.

My initial dolls were not elves or girls, but rather male dolls that might be used for portraits. Images of lords, kings, princes, and even criminals served as inspiration for me.

One doll takes around a month to make. I start by drawing a sketch on paper, then I choose the fabrics. The structure of the face, arms, and legs are then sculpted. Every time I create a new, one-of-a-kind face. I don’t use any molds and prefer to work with Super Scalpey and La Doll.

I’m always coming up with new ideas. Beautiful films, graphics by other artists, art photography and exhibitions, music, and travel serve as sources of inspiration. A piece of old cloth can sometimes suggest a motif for a new doll series.

To avoid becoming burned out while making dolls, I like to take a little break or vacation for myself. I can switch jobs for a short period, such as going to sketch. A change of scenery is beneficial. After the rest, I enjoy making my dolls again.

My dolls are all lovely, sensitive, fascinating fairies and simply girls in love. They are not depressed; rather, they are passionate dreamers. It is vital to me that each doll has a distinct personality and set of emotions. Emotions are what bring the doll to life. And each doll has a unique backstory.

When it comes to my work’s creative stages, I enjoy them all. But the most fascinating and intriguing part is when I design the doll’s eyes. She glances about and comes to life at this point.

For example, I post videos of the doll-making process on my Instagram account @oplakanska, as well as pictures of our art studio, as well as our creative lives. A lot of our information can be found on Instagram, where we provide a lot of important information for anyone who are interested in creating dolls themselves.

A second book about dolls is also in the process of making with Elina..”Style of the dolls, searching for your own character design” will be the title of it.
