Because of language and cultural difficulties, moving to another country can be quite difficult. However, relocating to a new location is becoming more popular, especially now that we have the resources to prepare for it: study the language, learn more about the area, ask for advice, or find people who can assist us on our journey. The opportunities to learn more about a certain country are limitless. People cannot, however, be prepared for everything, and this is where the fun begins. People learn to adjust to a new environment by getting lost and experiencing culture shock.
Living in another country means discovering new things every day, and it’s great to share your discoveries with people. With this in mind, @kayywuerf, an American TikTok user, began sharing videos of the differences she has noticed since moving to Australia.

Kaymie Wuerfel, a 23-year-old American, recently relocated to Australia. She relocated to Sydney from Florida in 2020 after marrying an Australian. On TikTok, she posts funny and short videos in which she recreates daily scenarios. One of her video series, for example, is titled “Things I Had To Learn Working At An Aussie School.” Kaymie, who works as a teacher, explained how she struggled at first to understand what her students said.
Kaymie explains her reactions to things that are considered normal in Australia but are handled differently in the United States in her video series “Culture shocks: relocating to Australia from America.” Aside from learning new vocabulary, she also had to adapt to the idea that refills are not free and that grocery bags and sauce at a fast-food restaurant cost money.
The woman revealed some nice things she learnt throughout her journey of getting to know her new home. Kaymie was pleasantly surprised to learn that in the event that a person need medical assistance, their expenditures are covered by Medicare—a national health insurance program. There is no single health care program in the United States, as it consists of both private and public health coverage. In one of her videos, she also mentioned that she had no idea Australians don’t tip servers since they are paid a fair wage.
People were fascinated by the differences between Australia and the United States, thus these TikTok videos became viral. It’s also a fun approach to see things from a new angle and learn something new. Which of these “shocks” do you prefer? Please share your ideas in the comments section below!
